EMF Meters – Why You Need to Own One in 2025

Often I am asked, “How do you know you’re being effected by EMF?” This question is from curious skeptics and MDs, never Moms—they’re not as skeptical.

My response: After sitting 6’ from a router 8-10/hours day, 6 days/week for 3 months, I traveled to Washington, D.C. (April 2019). As I walked down a street, the skin on my arms itched, then burned, and as I got closer to a cell tower (hidden in architecture in the city), my skin felt like it was crawling. These are classic symptoms of nonionizing radiation.

This was the beginning of symptoms that would alter the course of my life, questions of where I could safely go, timing for smallest crowds, methods of transportation and more (avoid elevators!).

Upon arrival in the US, my first purchase was an EMF Meter, and it was my beacon to warn me before I would have symptoms. I purchased perhaps the first consumer meter, the TRI-Meter. It’s been on the market the longest and is still recommended for scouting out Magnetic fields and Electrical issues—but not Radio Frequencies.

As with many of the combination meters, the Tri-Meter fails to capture the ELF, Extreme Low Frequencies such as Alexa. The ELF of these devices (Alexa, Echo, etc) is extreme and harmful—a bedtime story-telling device that disrupts the kids’ sleep!

Meters will help you stay safe! There are 4 reasons, at least, to invest in meters to measure your exposure—

  • The radiation environment changes, often amped up or more towers in the area or new 5G cells;
  • Increasing number of consumer products carrying chips to detonate (yes, detonate!) to the “smart” meter and they’re beaming around the home every few seconds until disabled
  • Your own physiology changes—until I detoxed the heavy metals in the covid treatments, I was a walking antenna for 2-3 years
  • Children, especially, and the whole family should be living in the least toxic environment, which only the meters can read

Traveling internationally for work and to visit the grandchildren, I’m continually finding novel situations to investigate—hopefully before I start “feeling” the radiation but that doesn’t always happen.

With meters I have gone into my daughter’s UN office and discovered a cell tower directly across the highway from the fourth story office and an 8” tangled tube of electrical wiring running through the room. And she was pregnant.

Only the conference room and her office were High Risk zones. That day she was able to move to another office, and she reported later that her stress level dropped to near zero.

Living in large cities with heavy “connectivity”, we have used meters to determine whether to rent or to move (if already there). Within a living space, the RF will vary widely; we’ve determined the safest place to set up the kids’ play zone, where to place major furniture and beds, which windows to shield with film and lined curtains.

6 Forms of EMF

While there are six forms of Electromagnetic fields, four are the most pervasive, and when identified you can do something about it—or know when you can’t fix it!

These are magnetic fields, electrical issues, radio frequencies (RF), and dirty electricity (DE).

Magnetic fields are usually outside and beyond your control, i.e. they cannot be fixed. This occurs with overhead powerlines in a neighborhood, and there might be no issues a few streets away, but not where you want to buy or rent. Magnetic fields can also run in water pipes in a home or a whole neighborhood (only a Gauss meter will tell you this).

Before buying or renting a home, a professional EMF assessor should measure these fields. My daughter’s family declined to rent a house they loved when the professional found magnetic fields higher than he’d seen in 16 years of testing.

EMF METERS—Tested, compared and recommended by Professional Assessors

Radio Frequency or “RF”

Radio frequency or “RF” fields (including microwaves and 5G) refers to the high frequency EMFs that we’re most concerned about daily– cell towers, cell phones, smart meters, Wi-Fi routers, wireless computers, notepads, baby monitors, TV and radio broadcast towers, microwave ovens. And the list expands daily with chips added to every object imaginable purchased by consumers from BBQ grills to baby diapers (yes!).

This is the meter you’ll be using most frequently for years to come. The highest recommendation for consumers and professionals alike is Safe and Sound Pro II. It’s simple to use and covers ELF to 5G with a range of 200MHz to 8GHz.

I’ve used this for years, and there are days I won’t leave home without it.

Magnetic Fields

Before buying or renting a home, this area should be tested by a professional assessor—or buy the professional grade Gauss meter and get training.

The sources of magnetic fields related to the home commonly are power lines, electrical panels, transformers, electrical wiring, lights, appliances, refrigerators, computers, electronics and most other electrical sources.

You’ll learn not to use dimmer switches and not to place a bed against a wall where the refrigerator is on the other side.

Accurate and reliable testing of magnetic fields requires a Gauss meter. The Alpha UHS2 is the lowest-cost meter recommended for measuring magnetic fields — that is accurate and reliable enough for professional testing purposes, This is a triple-axis meter with a very wide frequency range from 13 Hz up to 75 kHz (75,000 Hz).

The UHS2 meter would be reliable for testing a new home before you buy or rent.

The budget meter that engineers find is adequately reliable in measuring magnetic fields is the Trifield TF2. This “tried and true” meter will indicate problem areas, but don’t use it in making a decision to purchase or to move or in measuring for others.

(This Gauss meter has been combined with the best electricity measuring meter, ME3851A into the Safe & Sound EM3.)

Electrical fields

This area has been studied the least of the Electro-Magnetic fields, and it’s had the longest impact on humanity because we are electrical beings. Since the electrification of the planet, sickness caused by electricity has been recognized as causing harm. GeoVital, an Austrian-based company in EMR mitigation, advises using a Body Voltage Meter to determine electrical exposure–rather than measuring the air. So does California veteran of EMF mitigation, Michael Neuert. When holding a meter to measure electrical fields, the body’s own voltage will prevent accurate readings– I’ve experienced that.

If the body’s readings are high, there are electrical wiring issues in the building. Then, to ferret out the source of poor wiring, a simple AM Radio turned on by the breaker panel will expose Dirty Electricity by testing one switch at a time. And Safe Living Technology has successfully combined the best electricity measuring meter, ME3851A with the Magnetic field meter Alpha USH2 into the Safe & Sound EM3.

Note: Until you take the steps to measure and reduce your exposure, do this—Move beds 8-10” away from any wall to reduce any Dirty Electricity exposure from wiring in the wall and unplug every lamp, appliance, etc. in the room (you have a battery-operated alarm clock, right?) or buy a switch to automatically turn off the bedroom breaker at the electrical box. Sweeter Dreams!

We can do a 20-minute, free consultation to discuss your concerns with EMF issues in the home and family use of electronics. In a longer consultation many actions can be taken to reduce exposure and shield from these pollutants (or you can take the 7-step course and go through these steps). However, only meters can find sources you’d never suspect and enable a safer, healthy home. After you’ve had some practice with the meters, do the EMF Exploration for neighbors, friends, and family.

At the time of writing, Safe Living Technologies (where we recommend you buy your meter) was warning of impending price rises due to the 25% trade tariffs coming into effect.
